This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
After my first year of teaching I realized, kids love learning about the world around them through non-fiction texts! Boys especially love reading about "true" things and need more access to these texts in my classroom.
My students attend a low-income school in Washington, DC.
Our library is very limited. As emerging readers they need more access to quality literature and texts. I was pleasantly surprised to see how engaged students become when reading about real things through non-fiction texts, and I want them to be able to have accessible texts at their level where they can improve their reading AND learn about the world around them.
My Project
Help my students engage with learning by giving them access to a library of engaging non-fiction texts and quality children's literature. This leveled reading set offers a variety of books at different reading levels, making sure that every student is appropriately challenged and supported. These books will be used as students read independently, as well as engaging in important reading and thinking skills that we cover in class.
By giving my students access to quality non-fiction texts, you will not only help support their reading development.
More importantly, you will make reading an interesting, fun, and exciting experience for students with limited access to texts at home and in their community.
