Help me give my students bookshelves that will not only house the books in our classroom library, but also transform our space into a motivating library "book nook" geared towards focused reading and writing.
My fifth graders come together as strangers but leave as family. I strive to bring my students together through identifying their similarities and differences, allowing them to engage in personal inquiry, but most of all through literature. My students love to read! Together we develop empathy by experiencing the challenges and hurdles that characters overcome.
My students are engaged in meaningful projects that connect the learning done in the classroom with our community.
Shared experiences, creating connections, building empathy and developing awareness bring my students together to achieve goals and make a difference.
My Project
Right now, my students have access to many books in my classroom, however, they don't really have a place other than their desks to read them.
Providing a comfortable and organized reading space will increase student motivation to read.
My goal is to provide a space that allows for engaged, sustained reading. These bookshelves will abut counters with shelving that will hold books, as well as the wall, to create an inviting reading space.
These bookshelves will act as a library as well as borders to promote motivation and focus. students will have access to hundreds of books in various genres. Additionally, this area will also be used as a place for students to conduct the research that will lead to awareness, activism, and changes on topics that are important to our community. This year, my students will be researching, interviewing, and advocating for people of all abilities to make sure that our community is accessible for everyone.
