Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This is my first year teaching second grade and I currently have a small collection of a variety of high-interest books for my students that I have purchased. The problem is that since the books are limited, they are not able to be categorized very well by reading levels and many students try to read books that are either too low of a reading level or too high of a reading level.

Having this library will allow me to place books in each correct reading level, communicating to students which level they are, while helping them practice reading and how to progress (move up a level) in both a gradual and successful way.

In addition, I will also be able to take the books that I had previously purchased and place them into correct reading levels.

A little about my students: My students are diverse and amazingly resilient. They include students composed of 77% economically disadvantaged, military children, and second language learners. Many of these students do not have books at home to practice reading or support from family members due to many factors out of the families' control (language barriers, illiteracy, mental health, as well as work/ life balances). Even with all the barriers in life, my students love learning and discovering through literature. I would love your help in making reading much more equitable for my truly remarkable students!
