My group of third graders this year are simply amazing. The group is diverse in that they come from all walks of life. Actually, the group can be divided into thirds. The first few students come from single-parent homes. They live in a rented house, apartment, duplex, or with other family members such as grandparents. The next group consists of students from Mexico and Central America. These students are learning English as well as the other academic subjects in third grade. Finally, the last group are students who come from traditional homes with mom, dad and siblings.
Reading brings us all together.
We can travel anywhere in the world through a book. My students need as many books as they can get their hands on which is the reason for this project.
My Project
These books will be the beginning of our brand new classroom library. I currently borrow twenty books per week from our school library for students to read when they finish assignments or during reading time. This project will allow students to have a library in the classroom with a larger selection of books at their fingertips.
Books from a variety of authors and genres will make our classroom library full of adventure and fun.
I want students to experience the joy of opening a book, feeling the pages, smelling the "new book smell", and developing an overall love of reading for a lifetime.
