Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I'm a teacher at a new school! My kindergarten students will be entering a dual language program.

I teach dual language Spanish to 2 homerooms of 20 students each.

All of them are full of ideas and are eager to share what they learn in class.The majority of them come from low income homes, with limited access to resources outside of the classroom. These students are ethnically diverse, and all of them have a different story to tell. The majority of my students are English Language dominant students who are building new vocabulary in Spanish. All of my students are building their confidence in reading, writing, and sharing their own personal stories in a new language. All of my students are ready to jump into new experiences and build their Spanish vocabulary.

My Project

My goal is to build a classroom that is rich in Spanish conversation, collaboration, and community. From a morning message that greets my students as they walk in the door, to shared readings, songs, and math talks, a new easel will allow all of my students to engage equally with new academic content. This easel is mobile and will allow me to hang chart paper and pocket charts, as well as write messages. In combination with the books, my students will expand their vocabulary and be able to discuss the stories with their partners, as well as have an opportunity to come up to the easel and share their ideas, discover new Spanish words, and add on or ask questions of their classmates. The books will also play a part in partner reading in our classroom reading nook.

They will be learning Spanish and English at the same time. I am very excited to be part of this program and teach their growing minds!

They are eager to learn and explore new ideas and a new language, but we need the necessary materials and resources to be successful.

I want my students to get the best so they can succeed and learn at their full potential. In order for them to be successful we need a lot of Spanish books, and an easel to help them visualize what we are learning that day.

My kids and I will use the easel to help them to learn new vocabulary, about the weather, the days of the week and the months of the year, and even solve math problems... ALL in Spanish. I would also like to make a "biblioteca española" in the classroom with the books. My kids will really appreciate having these resources in the classroom!
