This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How do you ensure that EVERY student is actively engaged, participating, and learning in a class with 25 students? How do you encourage EVERY student, not just the same few students, to share their answers and, more importantly, their thinking? All this can be achieved with dry erase lapboards!

Our school is a wonderful and cohesive community of students, parents, and staff.

Sixty-two percent of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch and approximately 33% of our students are English language learners. Of my 25 students, 11 are English learners. I teach intensive intervention language arts to 4th and 5th grade students who are two or more years below grade level. Although my students struggle with reading and writing, they are curious, hardworking, and love to read and learn! Independent reading is their favorite time of the day. They are always so excited anytime I introduce new books to our classroom library. The staff, students, parents, and I are all working hard to make sure these wonderful students reach their fullest potential.

My Project

I am requesting 30 dry erase lapboards, 1 set of storage bins, 1 pack of markers, and 3 packs of erasers. Using lapboards will be a fun and engaging way for my students to practice reading, writing, and other language arts skills, such as diagramming sentences and identifying parts of speech. The use of lapboards also increases student accountability and allows all students to show me their thinking and their answers. Just as importantly, the use of the lapboards will allow me to assess the learning and understanding of all my students. Through this assessment, I can immediately address misconceptions and identify students who would benefit from small group or one-on-one instruction.

My students will use the lapboards as tools for developing their reading, writing, and language arts skills.

Since there is a shift from learning to read to reading to learn in 4th grade, many of my students are also struggling in other content areas because they are currently unable to read and access the content material. The use of the lapboards will likely lead to improved performance in language arts as well as other content areas.
