My Students
My students come from a diverse set of countries all over the Caribbean, South America, and Central America. Many of them are first-generation immigrants, whose parents come in search of the American Dream. In terms of socioeconomic class, many of my students come from disadvantaged backgrounds, much like myself. Despite all of the challenges my students face at home, on the streets, and at school, they never cease to amaze me with their hard work and determination.
Given that many of our students come from low-income families, they lack the resources needed to obtain the very best education they deserve.
As I look around my class, I'm proud to say that I see a group of incredibly talented and intelligent students that excel in debate, cheerleading, track, band, football, theater, dance, and choir. I truly believe every single one of my students has what it takes to do anything they set their minds to. They just need the resources and opportunities to make it happen.
My Project
Reading is a fundamental skill that will impact my students' in all areas of their current and future education. Every exam they take from here on out will require them to be proficient readers. Exams in all other content areas—whether it be Biology, Algebra, or History—require them to read and comprehend written questions or problems. For that reason, it is imperative that they improve their literacy skills through independent reading.
These books hold the key to my students' success in high school, college, and their future careers.
In order to increase their reading proficiency, they must practice their reading and cultivate a passion for knowledge. Reading fiction is a fun way to pique students' interest in reading more generally. In the long run, this will allow students to increase their reading comprehension, which will in turn lead them to improve in all subject areas. Moreover, it will prepare them for the SAT, college, and a successful career in the future.
