At my school we have average class size, the student/teacher ratio in my school is 22-1, and we have 71% of our students on free or reduced lunch. My Fifth grade classes consist of teaching two groups of eighteen students, focusing on English Language Arts and US History. Both classes are diverse; ranging from different ethnic groups, genders, and ability levels. I have students ranging from 2nd grade to 8th grade reading levels, heterogeneously grouped in my classes. Currently, I have seven students that are above average, 5 of which are awaiting test results for the Gifted and Talented Program. I also teach 6 students that are reading below Fifth grade level, but three of which receive extra support services in a resource classroom. This project will engage and aide my low level learners and enrich and captivate my high fliers.
My Project
These books will be used in the classroom to engage students in reading. Most of the Dr. Seuss books will be used during "Read Across America" week, while some will be read aloud to connect history. Students will be able to read with partners the different books and then compare their stories with their peers. My students love the choose your own adventure books, even my reluctant readers like to engage in making decisions to change the path of the story! Other materials will integrate reading and writing into our Social Studies lessons. Students will be able to use these materials to analyze and write about, sparking their own creativity as readers and writers.
