Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I currently teach in a low-income Title 1 school. This means that a high percentage of the students in my school are on free/reduced lunch plans. While my students are faced with hardships at home, you would never know their struggle by watching them in the classroom.
My students are a fun, silly, vibrant group of 1st graders who are so excited about learning!
Reading is their favorite activity in and out of the classroom, but unfortunatly books can be hard to come by at home. I currently have a program where I send home a bag of books for each student each week, and they return the books on Friday. As a first year teacher, building up my library has been hard, but I want nothing more than to help feed their love of reading and reaching their high fluency goals. By starting this project, my hope is to build up my classroom library with more challenging books to help keep my students engaged in reading while also helping them to become better readers.
My Project
In first grade, students are just learning how to read. It is important to have books that are interesting and at a students reading level. Doing this allows students to find joy and success in their reading practice. Being in a low-income school, students and teachers are not always equiped with what they need to esure student success. This is why I am requesting reading books for my classroom library.
These books will be used in book bags that will go home weekly for students to practice their reading.
My goal with this request is to keep my students love for books alive by providing them with stories at their reading level. These books will also help with students fluency, as they would have the books to read throughout and entire week.
