A lot of my students come from families where education is not a priority. I try to let them know every day at school is a gift and learning to read will provide them with a lifetime of opportunities.
I teach at a Title 1 school in Oklahoma.
This past year, our free and reduced meals were around 80%. My students are wonderful, however they do not have a lot of real world experiences. Everyday I try to make sure I am enriching their lives. Even with the challenges my students face, they greet me everyday with a smile so I know I must be doing something right.
My Project
First Grade is where the fundamentals of Literacy are learned. This year I am implementing a new reading program and hope to provide my students with a special place to keep their leveled reading books and library books. I am creating a reading corner and want my students to be proud of what they are reading. By having our books located together in our reading corner, my students will be able to read to themselves, with visitors, and with me in our special classroom spot. We will also use this corner for our Literacy Station time. Creating an environment where children want to be will increase their enthusiasm to read! I am requesting 2 sets of organizer boxes (12 per set) so a total of 24 boxes to hold our books. I am also requesting 2 of the student work organizer racks. These racks will store our book boxes and are designed so students can access them. Each student work organizer rack holds 12 boxes, so I would need 2 so each box has an easily accessible spot for students.
This donation will help my students spend more meaningful classroom time reading books on their level and of their choosing!
I hope for each student to have a love of reading by the time they leave my classroom!
