My Students

How do you get middle school students interested in reading when there are so many other stimulating things to do? These students need high-interest reading materials that they can relate to.

My students live in a low-income, rural area where reading support outside of the school day is minimal.

Most families of the community do not realize the value of reading and cannot afford books. Thus, most of the students are not encouraged to read and do not experience reading for enjoyment.

My Project

My 6th grade students will be completing a unit on the study of mythology. "The Lightning Thief" by Rick Riordan coincides nicely with this unit. This novel will not only help to further their knowledge and understanding of this genre, but this high-interest read will capture their attention and spark a love for reading. This is a book in which students can relate to the character. It lends itself to the discussion of issues such as learning disabilities, the nature of family, and the themes of loyalty, friendship, and faith.

Having a class set of "The Lightning Thief" will allow all students to have a book in their hand, not only to improve their language skills and broaden their vocabulary, but to gain personal enjoyment.

Additionally, this book is the first in a series which will give novice readers the opportunity to develop the reading pleasure that life-long readers experience.
