Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

"If you can't beat them, join them." During the course of the school day, many of my students will complete all of their assignments that are technology based. When asked to read a book, they find it boring and taxing. I would like to increase their stamina and self-efficacy.

Many of my students are reading two to three grades below their grade level.

Unfortunately, this makes it difficult for them to read on their own because they become discouraged when they do not know the meaning or how to pronounce words. Also, many of them are economically deprived so access to digital readers is not an option. Additionally, they enjoy sharing and collaborating because it gives them a feeling of success. Despite the fact, that they do not like to read, they do enjoy learning about the lives of others around the world. Being given an option of reading self-selected books, will give them an avenue to increase their stamina, vocabulary usage, and background knowledge.

My Project

If given an opportunity to self-select their reading material, this will increase their stamina, self-efficacy, and give them exposure to multiple genres. It goes without saying that when students feel empowered their chances of meeting the rigor of state and district assessments. Additionally when my students are struggling with words in context, the kindles will allow them to identify the words' meanings and allow them to make annotations about content they may not grasp. Moreover, using kindles in my literacy routine will empower both myself and my students to participate in a dialogic classroom. In a dialogic classroom, students are permitted to select their own reading material and engage in literary discussions and other activities based on what they've read.

Studies show that when students lack confidence in any content area academically, they do not perform at their best or they fail.

If they are given an opportunity to use technology to help them complete a task that they are struggling with, it will give them the confidence to complete the task successfully, expose to a variety of text, and increase their stamina.
