My classroom is an amazing place to teach and learn. It's my second home, and if you could talk to my students, many of them would say the same thing too. One of our keys to success has been flexibility, and recently, my students and I were presented with the opportunity to meet John Lewis!
My school serves students at-risk of dropping out of high school.
We do everything in our power to get our students back on track for graduation. I've devoted the last 13 years of my life to figuring out the best ways to teach and reach my unique population of students--and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. I set the bar high, and year after year after year, my students rise to meet the challenge. One thing I know about my students is this: they love learning about the things I love teaching about, and I can't wait to teach my students all about John Lewis, a key figure from the Civil Rights Movement.
My Project
With your help, my students will spend four weeks engaged in a study of the Civil Rights Movement through the use of the graphic novel March: Book Two. After this shared experience--reading, writing, speaking, researching, collaborating--we will take a field trip to meet John Lewis in person! Knowing that they will get to meet John Lewis is certain to be a huge motivator for more deeply engaging in the challenging lessons I am currently crafting. This is certain to be unforgettable.
It's not every day that any of us have the opportunity to shake hands with history, to encounter world-changing events so up close and personally.
