Read the Book Before Lightning Strikes the Stage

Help me give my students a class set of The Lightning Thief so we can read, discuss, analyze, and enjoy the story before seeing the play in October.

My Project

My 4th graders are growing every day as readers, thinkers, and confident discussion leaders. A class set of The Lightning Thief will give every student the opportunity to experience the same exciting novel together. As we read, students will discuss characters, follow the plot, make predictions, ask questions, and strengthen their reading stamina.

This project is especially exciting because our students will have the opportunity to see The Lightning Thief performed on stage in October.

Reading the novel first will give them a deeper understanding of the characters, setting, conflicts, humor, and Greek mythology woven throughout the story. After reading, students will be able to compare the book to the play and see how actors, music, dialogue, and staging transform a story from the page to the stage.

The Lightning Thief is packed with adventure, humor, friendship, mystery, challenges, and mythology—everything that can hook a young reader! Along the way, students will practice important reading skills such as identifying character traits and themes, analyzing problems and solutions, determining point of view, exploring vocabulary and figurative language, and supporting their thinking with text evidence. The Greek mythology woven into the story will also spark curiosity and introduce students to stories that have been passed down for generations.

Having a class set means every student can fully participate. Students can follow along, reread important passages, mark their thinking with sticky notes, discuss ideas with partners, and share their thoughts during whole-class conversations. Most importantly, reading this story together will create a shared experience that makes our October field trip to see the play even more exciting, meaningful, and memorable for my students.
