This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Energetic, curious, eager tweens enter my classroom every day. Their energy is infectious and gets me on my toes to teach. Every day is a new day with challenges, laughs and even some frustrations, but each day I am prepared to tackle the obstacles and jump the hurdles with them. My students jump in the game with me each day to accomplish the learning targets and master the standards.
The one thing lacking for my students is a diverse classroom library to peak their interests in reading.
The purpose of this campaign to gain books and e-books for my students. My classroom demographic is 30% caucasian, 40% Hispanic, and 30% African-American. My students want to read, but the classroom library does not contain the modern literature that my students desire. I would also like to add e-reading books so that my students can pick up the Kindles that I have and read electronically, if they desire. Novels in Spanish are a huge request for many of my students.
My Project
Reading has changed so much over the past few years. So many of my students have not completed a novel or chapter book since their years in primary school. Recently, I have challenged my students to read a novel/chapter book per month. What's the problem? Many of my students want the books that have characters that resemble them physically or demographically.
Help my students to receive books that are culturally relevant.
They want to read books with characters that are experiencing some of the same trauma or social issues as they are. Amazingly, most of my students want physical books, not e-books or audiobooks.
