My Pre-K students are vibrant and eager to learn! They learn through playing, exploring and observing. They come from diverse backgrounds and bring a variety of languages, cultures, and experiences. They enjoy school and the opportunities a classroom provides.
My classroom is known as V PRE-K, new to Minnesota designed to address the readiness needs of children in the attendance area of schools with high needs.
Most of my students have little or no previous pre-K experience. A classroom is a completely new and foreign environment for the majority of my students. These students start their academic career with fewer readiness opportunities than other students.
In spite of their disadvantages, my students thrive. They arrive at a school where the staff care about them and work together to provide quality programming to ensure their success.. and they thrive.
My Project
My Little guy said "Can I Get Some Peace and Quiet...I'm trying to READ!" as he crawled under a table with a book he was trying to "Read". An inviting book corner would be just the right thing for him and his peers to look at pictures, practice turning pages and talk about stories they already know.
"The man who does not read has no advantage over the man who can not read" (Mark Twain)...this is what I think of when I notice my children NOT looking at books!
An inviting book corner would encourage young children to select books of their liking, have conversations with their peers about the books they are choosing and practice their pre-reading skills including:
* Pretending to read
* learning about parts of books
* Practice turning pages
* Practice left to right progression
* Loving books!
This is the second year this classroom has been in operation, so it's still a "Startup" classroom with limited resources. A reading corner with comfortable furniture would help get books into the hands of children who have few opportunities to read!
