My little learners brains are wired to acquire language and pre-literacy skills...they just need the materials to experience language in an academic setting. Pre-K students thrive when they hear quality literature, have opportunities to play with and re-tell stories and learn more about language and vocabulary. The materials donated to my project will give my Pre-K students the opportunity to develop listening skills, story re-telling, rhyming and alphabet knowledge and many other skills needed to be good readers! My students will use the materials to explore the alphabet by building letters, stamping letters in the art area and using letters in their sensory play. We link letters and letter sounds through playing with sounds. Children can focus on sounds by playing sound listening games. My students will also develop listening and vocabulary skills by listening to stories on headset. Research tells us children benefit from hearing the same story more than once. I've selected stories that can be used in a large group setting as well as in small group. I've also selected stories that can easily be retold by children. After children hear the stories in group situations they can retell stories using the story pieces. When children understand letters and sounds, retell stories or understand rhyming, they feel confident in their "Knowing". This confidence builds reading skills and transfers to other areas of learning. This helps make CONFIDENT LEARNERS IN OUR SCHOOL!
