My students need appropriate reading materials, audiobooks, and headphones for their reading class. A year-long subscription to Scholastic News would be great to get them interested in what is going on in the world.
I have fourteen hard working 5th and 6th graders in a substantially separate special education classroom. My students come to me for reading, English, and math daily due their significant learning disabilities. Three of my fourteen students also are ELL students.
Even though learning is a struggle for them, they put forth a huge effort in my class.
Things don't always come easy for them. But with a lot of support and reinforcement, I've seen their successes both big and small.
My Project
We are a substantially separate classroom with reading levels well below those of our peers. We are in search of materials that are appropriate for the lower readers that don't seem too babyish for 5th and 6th grade students.
My students are reading 2 or more grade levels below their current grade.
They don't like to show other students what they are reading for fear of being made fun of. They are willing to attempt anything I ask them to do, even when it is hard for them. I am in search of materials to keep their reading skills progressing and to keep their confidence up.
Through this project, my students will have access to audiobooks, novels at their reading level, and magazines that get them interested in learning more about the world.
