My students come from all backgrounds but have a love for learning. They like to be engaged in their learning and working in a safe place that helps them find new information and continue to search for more.
Students are learning and teaching each other.
We are always moving and changing things based on what we are learning and what each student needs. They are in groups, independent, partners, etc. Providing them with the means to work on diverse tasks and in different areas is important. They can find what works for them and is the most comfortable.
My Project
My students need to have good books around them at all times. New titles and interests are changing quickly and replenishing classroom libraries is costly. I want my students to be able to love reading and have books they want to read. Morning read aloud with picture books such as Bully, Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun, Ivan and many more help lead important discussions about issues students face every day. This allows for classroom discussions on skills and life and just to enjoy a good book together. Some students are never read to and they all sit and soak in the new story and take on the characters as they go through their journey.
Being able to read books aloud every day helps engage reluctant readers.
Listening to a read aloud and the skills used then is used during their independent reading time. Good books and top books are important for a classroom library. Series like Roscoe Riley Rules keeps kids interested. An old favorite, Boxcar Children, has made new books as Graphic Novels. I can't keep these on my shelves and they are excited to read!
