This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his needs, is good for him." —Maya Angelou My students come to me from homes that are not filled with books and from families who have no time for stories; they have not had the chance to build a love of reading.

I teach in a school that has 95% free/reduced lunch and at least 80% Hispanic.

Out of 26 students, 19 of them have declared Spanish as their home language. I have students come into my classroom who have been to PreK, who have never been to school, and (this year) 5 who have never spoken English. My greatest concern for my students is, can I teach them to read by the end of the year.

My Project

I provide my students with a list of 175 sight words that I would like them to know before first grade; my goal for each student is knowing at least 75 of those words. The books that I'm asking for would enable my students to practice these sight words in an actual text, rather than simply using flash cards. Our reading program in our school only focuses on 30 words but I feel that doesn't prepare our students enough to be fluent readers in first grade. My students would be able to go into our classroom library and select both fiction and nonfiction books to read. Having these books would mean that my students could read the text independently, fostering a lifelong love of reading!

A lot of my students don't have the same access to books that many of us take for granted.

They come from homes where there might not be anyone to read to them, if they even have any books at home. My classroom will be the place where they can go to read to their hearts content! By encouraging this love for reading, we will be empowering a child to become a reader for life!
