When children enter my classroom they are creating lasting memories and have unique opportunities to uncover their abilities. I try to think outside the box and reach learners how they learn best. Each student is an individual; therefore, individualized teaching is necessary to reach his/her set goals.
Kindergarten is a young group of kiddos, but they are capable of more than we tend to give them credit for.
Exploring and discovery is key. I cannot command excellence, but rather, I have to show what can be done to reach it. The important aspect to this is that there isn't just one way to get there, and when a student discovers a new path, one can't help but be proud of the moment they made for themselves. When they realize excellence is what they make, the teaching truly begins.
I live for the moment to see my students rise above their socioeconomic deficits and show their capability beyond statistics. Anything is possible, and in my classroom, the kiddos and myself are there to remind one another of just that.
My Project
I simply do not have enough lower leveled texts to accommodate for their ever growing minds. Each student has their own book bin that they fill with choice texts, and texts used during guided reading. The problem that arises is that many kiddos have already read most of the books available to them, especially my kiddos who are struggling readers and need more texts available to practice their reading skills. There are not enough texts on the shelf to let them flourish in their abilities. They need a healthy mix of fiction and nonfiction books, as well as, books that I can use to model reading at their level.
My students are in need of a literacy rich classroom.
There are so many delicious books out there that would really help in students growth not only in reading, but can cross over to writing, because as I tell the kids, reading and writing are best friends! These books will be used on the daily, during guided reading groups, independent and partner reading, their take home reading bags, modeling skills, and more.
Kindergarten is the foundation for reading. Without the right books and a good selection of books, growth is very difficult. You would be providing an opportunity for minds to grow, and what better way than through a book!
