My Project

Our state is not known for its diversity; this, however, is not true of my teaching community. My students are from all over the world; yet, many have never left the small community they have lived their entire life. We see many refugees in our school, some who have never attended an American school and others who have moved throughout our large city.

Our school district is the largest in our state; yet, my students are some of the most impoverished in the state.

They are resilient, curious, and compassionate learners who deserve to see themselves in the books they read.

My Language Arts classroom has evolved into a space where student choice is paramount and time to read is sacred. Currently, my middle school students utilize the small classroom library I have as well as the school library. Often, we have a waiting list for more popular titles.

I know my students value the emphasis on choice and time to read, and I want to empower them.

I looked at where I had gaps in our classroom library. I know these books will educate my students, provide them with an opportunity to see themselves in the book, and facilitate conversation.
