My Students

I teach the most amazing third graders! Our school community and students are in a very rural area; we are across the street from the Ocala National Forest.

In our classroom, we celebrate each other and build a positive classroom community where all learners are accepted, included and challenged.

My classroom is an ESE Inclusion classroom where I serve a group of very diverse learners. My students have positive attitudes and they believe in themselves and each other. Our classroom is part of a larger picture at our school. We believe in the power of the 'positive' and in creating a school family.

Most of my students struggle to make real world connections and have very little background knowledge. Because of our rural location, it is difficult for them to be a 'part' of the world. Many live down rural, dirt roads with no access to, or understanding of, the world. They thirst for experiences and for knowledge of the world around them and are filled with excitement when new materials, ideas and concepts are opened up to them. Because of the diverse ESE population in our room, exposure to new ideas and concepts is paramount to their success.

My Project

My class of inclusion students struggle to make gains in reading fluency. It is important to engage them in positive ways and to make reading more exciting. Our school is in a very rural area and my students do not have access to much technology or programs that help to encourage their love of reading and to increase their fluency as readers. I would like to have additional technology that allows them to practice fluency in different ways-through music, poetry, stories and self-recording.

Struggling readers benefit from listening to other readers read, and from listening to themselves read.

They need iPads to access recording and listening to increase reading fluency and make it exciting and fun.

Students who practice reading fluency increase their ability to understand what they read and build their confidence as readers. Using technology to encourage my students to have fun while learning and building their confidence in fluency, that's the spark that will make them lifelong readers.
