My students need Reader's Theater books and sight word phrases to help improve fluency. The comprehension cubes and retelling cubes can be used for hands on learning to improve comprehension skills after reading.

My Students

I am a Reading Specialist at my school. My reading students that I enjoy seeing every day are in Kindergarten through Fourth Grade. They come to my small group setting to improve their reading and writing! Some students do not have many print resources at home, so the books and activities they experience with me are very important. Our books are available to borrow to take home for extra practice and share their learning with their families.

The use of the new Reader's Theater books, and hands on fluency and comprehension materials, will allow my students to have the resources they need to succeed in reading and writing and find enjoyment from reading and writing.

Students learn what it sounds like to be a fluent reader and we work on comprehension skills and written responses. The goal for my students is to increase their skills in these areas, so they can successfully return to their classrooms without needing the additional small group reading and writing assistance!

My Project

Research shows that fluency is the bridge between recognizing words on a page and comprehending what you read. Therefore, my reading students will benefit from the Readers' Theater Folk Tales set. After students have read their book, they will love to perform their part with their peers where they can work on fluency and helping the reading sound like we talk.

The hands on materials, such as the phrasing cards, comprehension cubes, and retelling cubes will keep the attention of the students, so they can accomplish their reading and writing goals!

Students can practice the phrasing cards so they can transfer that learning into their new books.

After reading, students can roll the comprehension cubes and respond orally to questions about our new books. The writing prompt cubes will spur my students on to a written response about the book that they have read. Research shows that retellings are a way to see if students have understood the story.

I will be checking that my student's reading fluency and comprehension at the beginning of the year and, doing periodic checks throughout to make sure they are making progress. It will be great to have these new resources to use in the fall. My students will really enjoy the hands on learning tools to use in our reading classroom!
