This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many obstacles they face, I am looking to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences in the music classroom.
My students are eager to learn new things and love to participate in hands-on activities.
They enjoy singing and playing classroom instruments. My students have very few opportunities to participate in active music-making outside of the school day; therefore, it is my goal to give them a variety of musical experiences during class time.
My Project
I am requesting children's books in order to make music to literature connections during students' weekly music classes.
Students will be engaged in activities that promote learning in the concept areas of beat, rhythm, melody, harmony, form and expressive qualities through the use of songs, poems, and literature connections.
In addition, students will be engaged in activities that promote reading concept areas of speaking and listening, fluency and comprehension. Music activities will allow students to broaden their understanding of familiar books by engaging in creative, hands-on music making centered around the literature. Students will be energized through the performance opportunities.
