Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in an amazing community. It is a very poor community. Our district/school provides free breakfast, lunch and dinner to each student. The families and children are very appreciative. The majority of children speak Spanish, learning English as a second language. We also have a large population of students with special needs. I have a mixture of students who are proficient in English and unfortunately, some that are not. I also have three students this year with IEPs (Individualized Education Program), two with autism. I have been teaching at this school for 19 years, in second grade, kindergarten and third grade. Some of these children grow up with single working parents. Some children grow up with one or both parents incarcerated. It is very important for me to set up a classroom in which my students feel safe and loved, as well as a place that is academically rigorous. I am a strict but fun teacher. I feel it is important that I set up a very structured environment. These children deserve the best!
My Project
I want you to imagine you walking into my classroom, or any classroom for that matter and looking at everything that I have around my classroom, all the supplies for my students, educational games. 98 percent of all those things I have bought. I stop at nothing to make sure my students have what they need.
In a previously funded project, I asked for 10 Scholastic magazines called Let’s Find Out.
My intention was to use these to engage my students in small groups to teach them how to have constructive conversations, teach reading, and to help them understand the world better by reading high interest, engaging, nonfiction magazines meant for them!
I would like each of my students to have their own magazine subscription. They each would receive 38 weeks of high interest, engaging material. They would be sent to the classroom and would take them home each week to practice more with their families.
Each one costs only $5.75 per student. I feel guilty asking for donations from my families. These families for the most part have difficulty providing food, clothing and shelter.
Please donate these highly engaging magazines so each one of my students can have their own copy. These will help engage my students, help them have constructive conversations, and practice reading materials that are meant for kindergarteners!
