Do you remember the joy of looking at your books as a young reader and finding your favorite? My kindergarten students are in need of containers to store their special books at home- containers of their very own, holding adventures and mysteries, opening the door to a lifetime of reading.
Students in my kindergarten class are incredible!
Each year they fall in love with characters in books, develop special interests through books, and demonstrate pure joy when they are the recipients of one to take home. Families in our school demonstrate strong support for the many after school events and classroom family literacy celebrations, but, may not be able to supply an individual place for their child to keep his/her own books at home.
Our high rate of poverty classifies us as a Title I school; over 60% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Yet, with these challenges, families continue to look for ways to help their children succeed. A special place to hold cherished books will help to plant the seeds of reading enjoyment for our 'Kinder-Garden' students and help them to bloom into lifelong readers.
My Project
The research on reading at home to children is clear: the benefits are both concrete (vocabulary development, book/print knowledge, concept development) and abstract (developing a love of reading.) Yet, in some homes, even with the best intentions, books are hard to find and difficult to protect.
This funding will enable kindergartners to bring home a decorated container of their very own. It will not need a shelf, or open space. The cherished contents, books made in school or received during the year, will be protected forever. Your generous contribution will have the potential to impact young learners as they begin their lifelong love of literature.
We are a school that is moving in many directions!
Family events throughout the year, free breakfast for all students, project based learning implementation, home visits for kindergarten families, and significant increases in attendance numbers. Families are building trusting relationships with our school; our home/school partnership is thriving. This funding supports our families who are continually seeking ways to help their children at home.
