Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are all English Learners that possess a strong desire to learn and great enthusiasm, too. They often face challenges in acclimating to a new country while maintaining a healthy and secure sense of self. Many times they have literacy skills in their native languages but struggle to find texts of interest to them in English that are also comprehensible.
As a teacher of English, one of my goals is to help them acquire the language so that they are able to read with comprehension and enjoy it, too!
Unfortunately, I learned last year through individual conferences with my students that few could recall book titles of texts they read for fun. Luckily through graphic novels my students have been able to find books they enjoy and now consider themselves readers.
My Project
“Miss, do you have any more books in Spanish?” Interestingly enough this question came from a student that I do not service as a teacher of English to speakers of other languages. He is not classified as an English Learner but comes from a family that outside of school speaks Spanish. A space now considered one with “good” books, my classroom welcomes students to peruse the shelves and check out texts of interest. One of my goals as an ESOL teacher is to foster a love of learning in my students so that they read (and read often) books that they enjoy and can understand. On their English learning journey the availability of these texts, often graphic novels because they have voiced their love of them, for my students is invaluable. Despite not being wholly proficient in the English language, my students can pick up a graphic novel and read it with comprehension using their literacy skills and the visuals provided to help them.
The materials outlined in this project are the result of conversations with students and noticing what texts are being frequently borrowed.
Many of these books written in Spanish are already a part of our classroom library, but in English. Having the same text in both English and Spanish is wonderful because I encourage students to first check out one and then the other depending upon their proficient in the languages. I have also had friends check out the same book one in English and the other in Spanish. I appreciate having these texts in Spanish because it is the most common native language spoken by students at my school.
