Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Most of my 5th grade students have been part of our English/Spanish Dual Immersion program since they were in preschool. They are not only bilingual and bi-literate, but they are also multi-cultural. They can speak, read, and write in English and Spanish, and are able to communicate with people from different backgrounds and cultures. They are caring and respectful, and they are aware that being bilingual is an important skill in our society. I’m confident that our future is in good hands with such hard-working and thoughtful scholars. Their curiosity is contagious and I am honored to be their teacher this year. Fifth grade was my favorite school year growing up, and I hope they enjoy their last year in elementary school as much as I did, even during this COVID 19 quarantine and during our distance learning/teaching.
My Project
Please help me give my students the gift of reading a great book from the comfort of their home during this new reality of distance learning and teaching we are all experiencing....an actual, paper book they can hold in their hands, savor and turn the pages to discover new and exciting story events.
Last March, when we were all forced to begin distance learning due to the COVID 19 pandemic, I sent my former 5th graders home with a few school materials and supplies, not knowing it would be the last time we saw each other in our classroom.
At that time, we were currently reading The Watsons Go to Birmingham, a story about an African- American family who travels from Flint, Michigan to Birmingham, Alabama in 1963. My former students took this book home with them.
Please help me purchase a new book of this amazing story for each of my students this year.
