Read Green, Speak Green, Live Green!

My students need 20 copies of the City of Ember and the People of Sparks as well as two copies of the audiobooks, and we need two iPods in order to record and broadcast podcasts.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 6th grade in a high-need area for Chicago Public Schools in Chicago, IL. The 30 students in my class are many times transient, come from low-income families, and are not given the opportunities other children receive after school and at home.

Until a few weeks ago I taught kindergarten, but because of restructuring I am now a 6th grade teacher! Money is tight, and to say I do not have materials for my students in an understatement! Budget cuts have forced our after school programs to cut over 75% of students, and my students are not given the opportunities to use their brains for something new and exciting. My students have revealed an interest in green living, and I hope to give them the opportunity to read, think, and teach with this project.

I would love to give my students the opportunity to read exciting and thought provoking literature. The City of Ember and The People of Sparks are books that excite and bring green living into the spot light. I can talk about green living until I turn blue, but reading about what may happen to our world if we do not make positive choices creates real thinking. After the students read the books, we will create three different podcasts in order to educate the other children in our school about green living. My students love technology, and the opportunity to use Ipods is so exciting! Getting 6th graders excited about learning is tough, but with your help they can discover how fun learning is!

You will make it possible for these high need students to learn with materials they are excited to use, but are not available because of cost. My students are excited about green living! You will allow us to discuss, read, and broadcast positive choices for our Earth. Getting 6th graders excited about learning is tough, but with your help they can discover how fun learning is!
