My Students

I teach at a large school in Hawaii. We have a large population of English Language learners, first-generation students, and students from difficult backgrounds. I teach ninth grade World History, and my students are predominantly underprivileged minority students in a very low-income area. Most of them qualify to receive free meals at school. Because of our demographics, resources at my school are very scarce.

Until COVID, we did not have any technology in our classroom, and I was still making printouts of the textbook and other resources for my students.

It is so hard to teach history without color maps, or books.

My classroom is mixed with students at all levels of the spectrum, so I aim to differentiate my teaching methods to fit each student's needs. I would like to be able to improve my classroom with maps, books, snacks, and tools so that ALL my students can feel comfortable in my class.

My Project

Our district is working on literacy skills for the next 3 years, and in an effort to bump up our scores we need to read every day in our classroom.

However, it is hard to improve the students' literacy, because we have no books to read!

I am gathering books from friends and donations here on campus but I also want to have some new books and graphic novels that they will be able to pick up and read during our class.
