My Students

I wish that each of my students would have access to books this summer. Many of them do not. If I could put 10 books in the hands of each of my students this summer, I would.

I am a special education teacher who has worked so hard to help her 3rd grade students become better readers and move closer to reading at grade level.

They have done a tremendous job rising to the challenge that I gave them this year. I will be moving up to 4th grade with them (YAH!), but I am so afraid of the summer slump! I want to continue with their progress and not lose two-three months of teaching following the summer months. My students have very loving, dedicated parents who are often working hard to make ends meet. Reading isn't always on the daily schedule and my students need to find the motivation from within. I want them to choose a book over TV or video games. I am planning on meeting with my kiddos throughout the summer to continue our reading journey. I will provide reading incentives because my struggling readers often need something more. I am willing to do whatever I can to get my group READING!

My Project

I would love to lend a set of ten books to each child for the summer. The books need to be entertaining, not overly challenging to discourage; and a pleasure to read. The books that we would receive from "Donor's Choose" are personally selected by each student, placed in a homemade book bag, and be accompanied with motivating "cards", questions, and messages from me. I will continue to communicate with them through phone, e-mail, and postcards. Each summer pack will be personalized to appeal to each child. One student loves "Dukes of Hazard", super heroes motivate a quiet student, another loves cats and dogs...I will do whatever I can to keep my students reading, but I need interesting books!

If it takes a book of cowboys or volcanoes to get my kiddos reading, I will find it!

I need to help my students make connections to develop the continued love of reading. I realize that I have the power to make great readers, but I need your help!
