This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My scholars are enthusiastic, avid readers who are eager to meet their grade-level reading goals!!! As we know the achievement gap is a literacy and language gap! With more books to read, my students will increase their chances of closing their gaps in 2nd grade.
I teach in a low-income community in New Orleans Parish.
By the end of 2nd grade, scholars are expected to read a STEP Level 9. My scholars came to me with an array of needs to be met. Like Goldilocks, some reading skills are too low for 2nd grade, some reading skills are too high for 2nd grade and some reading skills are just right for 2nd grade.
My school places it's highest priority to prepare our students to be successful in current and future grades. Our goal is to get all our scholars into college. In order to do so, they must first be able to READ and COMPREHEND materials that are presented to them.
My scholars are aware of their current reading levels and where they need to be by the end of the school year. My scholars are determined to meet their 2nd grade goals! With your help, I will be able to provide my scholars with MORE books that are on their reading level so that they may be able to read AND comprehend stories without experiencing frustration.
My Project
My scholars all have book baggies that are placed behind their chairs. Once a week they check-in and check-out books from our leveled-library. Scholars access these books during independent reading time and when they have completed assignments early.
With the purchased books, scholars will have more options and be able to use them to take Accelerated Reading quizzes every week. Every quarter, scholars are given a new Accelerated Reader goal. My scholars are determined to meet their AR goal!
Also, scholars check out additional books once a week to take home to read at night.
Donations towards this project will significantly improve my classroom and my scholars' lives!
By having more choices, my already avid readers will fall deeper in love with literacy. They will continue to push themselves to not only meet their goals but to surpass them as well. I thank you in advance for your thought and consideration!
