I teach in a low-income community in New Orleans Parish. By the end of 2nd grade, scholars are expected to read a STEP Level 9. My scholars came to me with an array of needs to be met. Like Goldilocks, some reading skills are too low for 2nd grade, some reading skills are too high for 2nd grade and some reading skills are just right for 2nd grade. My school places it's highest priority to prepare our students to be successful in current and future grades. Our goal is to get all our scholars into college. In order to do so, they must first be able to READ and COMPREHEND materials that are presented to them. My scholars are aware of their current reading levels and where they need to be by the end of the school year. My scholars are determined to meet their 2nd grade goals! With your help, I will be able to provide my scholars with MORE books that are on their reading level so that they may be able to read AND comprehend stories without experiencing frustration.
