My students need 13 books about children around the world to help them understand life in different countries.

Second graders are eager to learn about the world around them. But geography can be abstract and difficult to relate to their own lives.

It is hard for an 8 year old to imagine what life is like in countries such as Brazil, Gambia, or Japan, places far away from our suburban Washington State school.

To make our social studies relevant and accessible I'd like to enhance our study of the continents with a collection of literature that describes modern life in other countries. The books I have selected are rich, engaging portrayals of contemporary life around the world, along with a non-fiction book about the continents. By giving my students a glimpse of the cultures and customs in other countries will make the study of the world come alive. I think they will also discover how much alike children are all over the world.

You can help my second graders learn about the world. More importantly, you will be helping them to become tolerant, informed citizens of the world.
