My students are bright, funny, and full of personality. They come in the classroom everyday with a smile on their face and a ready to learn attitude. We approach each day with a growth mindset and know that if we don't know something or how to do something "yet" that we have the ability to learn each new thing that comes our way! My students know that I believe in them and support them 100%.
My students come from a low income and high poverty area and our school receives 100% free breakfast and lunch.
Many students are homeless or live in motels and are raised in single parent homes. Despite these challenges, I strive to do everything possible to keep my students engaged and keep learning fun while they are with me each day.
My Project
My students love that they are learning to read and write! I love seeing their faces light up when they learn a new word and can read it with confidence. I also love watching the progress they have made so far from the beginning of the year until now. One of my students could not hold a pencil correctly at the beginning of the year and is now writing with much more confidence!
I want to give my students the tools they need to continue to progress in reading and writing.
The picture dictionaries will help my students learn how to write new words on a daily basis as they look up pictures for the words they would like to write. This will also help grow their interest in writing because it will expand the words at their fingertips that they will have access to write. Students will be able to write about more things of interest to them and not get frustrated as easily if they are not able to explain what word they want to use but find a picture of it and know that that is the word they want to write! This will be especially beneficial to my ELL students who only speak English at school and need more exposure to the English language!
I currently have 12 whisperphones in my classroom and 18 students. My students love reading with the whisperphones and as a teacher, I love that they are reading and whispering at the same time! Whisperphones have helped students self correct words they may have said incorrectly and build fluency and confidence. I am requesting more whisperphones so that I have a full class set and the whole class can read at the same time when we read a story together.
