At Monarch Elementary School, 90% of our students are served free or reduced lunch. My second grade students crave our read aloud time together and I want to create an environment that fosters their love for reading. Do you remember how it felt when your mom read to you at night before you went to bed? That's the feeling I want to create in my classroom. After spending hours riding on the bus to and from school each day, they deserve to come into a warm, inviting room. The rug that I have for our reading time is too small for all of my students. That means that some have to sit on a cold floor. With winter coming, I feel that all of my students deserve to be comfortable while they enjoy a good book. I would like to have a rug big enough for 20 students, a lamp so that we could lower the lights and make our room feel more like home, and some pillows and bean bags for students to use when reading silently. With a reading center, my students could also have a place to go when they have finished other work and wanted to read silently. This would bring my students' love for reading to a whole new level and create an area that would be the hub of our classroom.
