My Students

My students are amazing! They love coming to school each day! School represents stability, caring, and developing a love of learning. Together we are building a community of learners where each person's contributions is valued and we count on each other.

My second graders are full of energy and excitement to learn even while facing challenges.

Over eighty percent of my students receive free school lunch. Several are homeless. Many are from immigrant households. Their families are hard working and counting on school to provide opportunities for their children.

Most of my students are reading below grade level, some well below grade level. While they are building reading skills and learning English, it is critical that they simultaneously build grade level reading skills. One great way to do this is through reading aloud to them.

My Project

In addition to academics, our school community is working hard on the social and emotional skills our students will need to build successful lives. Creating community while learning academic skills makes an incredible difference for all students, but especially for those whose lives are effected by trauma and poverty.

Most of my students are currently independent reading well below grade level, so reading aloud to them gives them access to grade level texts and thinking.

Having texts with diverse characters and positive themes such as resilience and managing strong feelings provides opportunities for my students to engage in deep thinking that is meaningful and accessible to all.
