Read Aloud Stories that Engage Scholars in the Writing Process

My Students

All students are diverse and energetic 5 and 6-year-olds in a southern Arizona Title I STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) school.

And 99% of our students qualify to receive free lunch.

Most are English Language Learners, including refugees from Africa, Asia, Mexico, and the Middle East. All coming from low-income households. School is often the first place my students are exposed to literacy, math, and STEAM activities in English. They come from homes where education is often not a priority, making the initial readiness gap wider. They strive to do their best against the odds and are always excited to come to school and learn.

My Project

Books are POWERFUL! Please help me bring these teacher read aloud stories into my classroom to share with my scholars. Each book title correlates to a genre of standards based writing. My students will see that pictures tell stories using wordless books like "A Ball for Daisy". The book title "When I was Little: A Four-Year-Olds Memoir of Her Youth" introduces students to narrative writing as told by a spunky little girl.

These engaging books will serve as a springboard for my scholars as they begin to see themselves as authors and illustrators.

These book titles cover the following genres: writing with pictures; writing with sentences; writing with stories; writing with narrative; writing with opinion; writing with directions; writing with persuasion; writing with imagination; and writing with information.
