Read Aloud Revival

Help me give my students 10 weeks worth of trade books for read aloud lessons to improve not only their love of reading, but comprehension and writing connections.

My Students

I teach 5/6-year-olds at a high poverty Title I school. They receive free breakfast and lunch at our school. Many of my students come in never having picked up a book or even having one read to them because they don't have access to literature. So many times I ask them, "Who reads to you at home?" Their answer? "No one".

Once I put a book in their hands their faces light up and they beg to have more stories read to them.

They want to know when story time is every day.

My Project

Having these new read aloud books will help encourage interest in reading and writing with my class of kindergartners.

My students will be making predictions, inferences, learning new vocabulary, learning about characters and different settings, as we read.

We will also have classroom book talks where students can discuss these books.

My students will also have a chance to write about what we are reading. They will be writing about their connections, problems and solutions, what they visualize and identifying characters and settings of the stories.

These lessons will help increase my students reading and writing levels because we will be focusing on literacy skills.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
