Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a school where 95.2% of students are socioeconomically disadvantaged and 67.7% are English Learners. Only 35% of adults living within my school's zip code have graduated from high school. The students I work with every day battle tremendous challenges, but they are incredibly bright and resilient and many of them have made tremendous progress this year despite the challenges they face.
The weight that many of my students carry on their shoulders is far beyond what any six-year-old should have to bear, but still, 21 bubbly faces bounce into my classroom each morning, ready and eager to learn.
I am so grateful to know each of them and their families.
My Project
Each day, my students gather on the carpet to hear a story being read aloud to them. Since many of these students are just learning English, and their families may not be able to speak English and read to them at home, it is so important for them to be read to at school. Not only is this one of their favorite times of day because they love being read to, but I use read alouds as an opportunity to teach and practice reading strategies and to model things that real authors do, for students to practice in their own writing. It is truly a special time!
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, only 53 percent of children ages three to five are read to daily by a family member, and children who are read to frequently are far more likely to enjoy school and to succeed academically.
By donating to this project, you would be helping to instill a love of reading in a group of Oakland first grade students and fostering their development in reading and writing!
