Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are bright, curious, normal teenagers who receive special education services. Just like their counterparts who are not in special education, my students are stressed over what teenagers are stressed about--balancing friends and family, trying to shape their future, understanding their place in the world as well as doing well in school.

I teach the Intensive Reading Clinic class.

In this class, students read books in small groups. We work on phonics skills, decoding skills and reading comprehension. At least once per week my students must work independently due to recent staff cut-backs. We do not have the personnel we once had to man our small group stations. During independent work, I would love for them to have a listening lab. During this time they would listen to well-loved classics and new exciting books and respond to writing prompts about the texts. This time would allow them the opportunity to take responsibility for their learning and to sharpen their comprehension skills.

We would benefit tremendously from this added resource and would be ever so grateful for your kindness!

My Project

My students often come to me not interested in reading because many enter my special education high school class as a Kinder - 3rd grade reader. Books are not fun because they have not been accessible to them. Having books on CD for them will open up new worlds for them and reinforce the value of reading. It will also give them information that they otherwise would not have gained on their own.

I want the read-aloud books to be a motivator.

I want them to be able to access books just like their peers. I want them to experience the joy of learning from text and discovering more about their world in the pages of a book. I want them to know how valuable reading is.
