The colorful pencils have made many students smile and have brought extra joy into our classroom.\r\n\r\nThe organizers have helped make our classroom more orderly and accessible. Students now know exactly where to find colored paper and other materials they need for classroom activities. Students are not interested in Shakespeare (too hard) or Steinbeck (too boring), so getting books that peak their interest with characters who look like them in the diverse urban population of students at my school site is critical to getting students to read.\r\n\r\nIn my AP English Language and Composition, the focus is on writing and non-fiction. But, it is important to continue reading novels in eleventh grade. The only reading level appropriate book at my school site is Outliers, which has been great, but I wanted the students to have a second novel. It gave them a peaceful way to reset, relax, and return to their work with a clearer mind.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, they were excited and grateful. Many of them immediately wanted to use the coloring books, and it was wonderful to see them take a moment to slow down and enjoy something creative. The organizers were also extremely helpful because we were able to create a designated section in the classroom for all of these supplies. Having everything in one place has made it much easier for students to access the materials when they need them.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, these resources will continue to support our students during Spanish lessons, projects, and stressful academic moments.
