This year my fourth grade class consists of a total of 25 students. Each student comes to my classroom with a variety of abilities. One thing is for sure though, and that is that each child can read and they can learn to love to read. It is my job to provide them with valuable, interesting texts that they want to read.
My students are always up for a challenge and find joy in learning new facts by reading books and magazines.
They love to share their new findings with their friends and with me. It opens the doors for positive discussion between peers. It is so important for students to want to share what they are learning with others. I can't wait to see these conversations develop as we explore together this year.
My Project
Scholastic Storyworks is a fantastic resource for my students. It consists of a variety of texts including plays, poems, informational articles, fiction stories, and paired texts. The author does a fantastic job of putting in facts and topics that grab students' attention. Students learn something new after reading each article!
Students will use these magazine for both reading and writing purposes.
The texts engage them into meaningful conversations with their peers and open the doors to writing about what they are reading. With these magazines, we will have "Storyworks Fridays." During the literacy block each Friday we will explore a different article(s). With this subscription comes an online resource as well. One way this resource helps students is that they can learn more about the articles through videos. These videos extend the learning about a topic included in the article. The online resource also allows me to get the articles on a variety of reading levels that meet the needs of my students. It also allows for a text to be read to a student.
