My Students
One of my favorite quotes is "the greatest gift is a passion for reading," spoken by Elizabeth Hardwick. Every day, the students I work with struggle with reading and find reading tedious, but with the right support and resources, I truly believe they will reach their goal of being life long readers and learners.
My 60 students are hard-working and persevere even when learning is difficult for them.
I have the joy of reaching different learners- I teach second grade part of the school day and reading intervention the rest of the day. Intervention group sizes vary from 2 to 16 and are grouped by need. Over half of them are English learners or have limited vocabularies and language. When walking into my Title One classroom, you would discover risk-takers performing in a safe environment where they are not afraid to play with language.
Our school has a supportive RTI team striving hard to identify student needs and pinpoint with ever-increasingly accuracy which intervention is right for the student. Due to the “can do” attitude of my students, I truly believe every child will reach their goal of being life-long readers.
My Project
These high-quality, engaging, and informative texts correlate to our reading series Journeys.
Students in the 21st century are expected to be able to combine information from more than one text.
Common core standards expect students to access secondary texts in order to achieve this skill. Furthermore, this skill is vital in their future when they go to college and will be expected to integrate information. In their future careers, my students will need skills of research in many different occupations.
Finally, I want to create an atmosphere of lifelong learners. By exposing my students to more texts that don't only exist in their textbook, they will find the joy of reading and scholarship.
