Read All About It!

My students need a wireless listening center to be able to listen to books on CD and tape. The wireless system will allow for easier storage and for a better quality sound for my students.

Dr Seuss, Little Golden books, or Mother Goose nursery rhymes...sound familiar? All of those wonderful stories that we can all remember being read aloud to us! Being read aloud to is the most successful way to instill reading in every child. I teach kindergarten in a small rural community. My classroom is filled with 21 kindergarten students who all learn in their own ways. I also have students who have physical challenges too, such as vision loss, hearing loss, as well as a student who utilizes a wheelchair. All of these challenges can make every day teaching at times difficult, but also makes each day interesting.

In my kindergarten classroom of 21 students they are given the opportunity to listen to stories read aloud to them on a tape or a CD. We have a 30 minute block of time each day devoted to independent reading and writing activities. One activity the students can choose is Listen to Reading. Of course this is one of the favorite things to choose. Listening to books read aloud helps to develop reading fluency and can help build up a child's vocabulary. During my seven years of teaching I have built up quite a library of listening book sets, some on tape and now many on CD. The wireless CD/Tape listening set would be very well used in my kindergarten classroom.

I have requested a wireless CD player/cassette player listening center with 6 headphones. Currently in my classroom I have a small size CD/cassette player with only 3 headphones. Although it serves its purpose it can be very difficult for the students to hear the sound clearly with other noise in the classroom. It is also very difficult to store and put away with many cords that get tangled and wrapped around the students arms and or legs when they try to get in a comfortable position to sit and listen on the floor. With only three headphones sometimes students in my classroom do not get the opportunity to be read aloud to during the school week.

With your help you will allow all 21 of my students to be able to be read aloud to each week during our independent reading and writing activity time. With a larger listening center that can provide 6 headphones that are comfortable and cord free, my students will be able to better utilize the books I have on tape and CD. My special needs students as well as all of my students will greatly benefit from this wireless listening center. To be able to hear many types of stories in different voices can instill a love of reading in all of my kindergarten students and give them that "being read to" feeling that we can all remember as a young child.
