Read Across Susquenita - A Community Collaboration

My Project

Middle school can be a difficult time for many students, and being part of an inclusive community can promote positive mental health and improve academic success. In an effort to provide an inclusive experience to our students and community, we are holding our second annual Read Across Susquenita Middle School.

Our goal is to obtain enough copies of The Fort by Gordon Korman so that every student in grades 5 through 8 can have their own novel and be part of a school-wide community of readers.

We would also like to provide novels to each staff member, including teachers, support staff, administrators, bus drivers, and custodians.

In addition to reading this novel as a school, we will use its themes of friendship, loyalty, courage, and integrity to create engaging activities across each grade level and throughout the community. We are also planning a virtual author visit. It is our hope that this book will facilitate important conversations and allow all students and staff members to foster and feel like they belong to a positive, supportive community.
