My students need engaging and entertaining books, like the "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series and multicultural novel sets, to make reading become their preferred pastime!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Growing up without having been read to as a child, reading for pleasure is at times a foreign concept to them. Incorporating these novels into their high school experience will help them connect with the material and fill in gaps from their youth to build a positive connection with reading!
Years behind their grade level peers, my students are taking on the challenge of learning Algebra II while still mastering elementary level topics such as memorizing their times tables and perfecting the art of long division.
But this road bump does not diminish their aspiration for learning.
Nearly all of my students come from low socioeconomic households, and many of them are students who are learning, or have learned, English as a second language. Our school promotes a college culture, and most families want to see their children be successful in school. However, they often lack the resources and support necessary to help provide for their children, my students, in the manner that they wish they could. My students want to learn, but they have grown up in a region of the country that makes learning all the more challenging, whether it's having long-term substitutes for the multiple years of their education, family members who have been involved in difficult situations,
My Project
This books will help our school shift from a culture that despises reading and looks to it as a mundane and excruciating experience to a world where scholars walk from class to class barely looking up from the books they are entrenched in. Reading at our school is becoming a preferred activity, and many students, many whom wouldn't have been caught dead holding a novel, are now finding books that transform their world and expands their horizons through the magic of non-fiction.
This project will help make new and exciting books available to our students, giving them safe and secure access to books that will change their outlook on reading, and improve their educational experience and their cognitive understanding of literature.
Thank you for helping improve the reading experiences of my students!
