Nearly all of my students come from low socioeconomic households, and many of them are students who are learning, or have learned, English as a second language. Our school promotes a college culture, and most families want to see their children be successful in school. However, they often lack the resources and support necessary to help provide for their children, my students, in the manner that they wish they could. My students want to learn, but they have grown up in a region of the country that makes learning all the more challenging, whether it's having long-term substitutes for the multiple years of their education, family members who have been involved in difficult situations, or friends who have been lost to violence in the neighborhood. Despite all of these factors, my students remain resilient in their quest to further their education on the path to graduation and then college.
