My Students

Our class consists of two dozen uniquely energetic, creative, motivated six- and seven-year-old students, enjoying the epic adventure that is First Grade. Ours is a neighborhood school, serving the families of our city since 1953.

These wonderfully wiggly young learners deserve every advantage as we work together to improve achievement in reading, math, and science by focusing on the whole child - while fostering their creativity and curiosity.

Thank you for taking the time to read about how we can work together to increase family and caregiver engagement. It has been a challenge getting volunteers into the classroom or active parental involvement at all this year. I think I've come up with an innovative outreach idea that will allow students and the adults in their lives to work together at home while supporting the classroom and improving academic achievement in literacy at the same time!

My Project

We need digital voice recorders with playback capability, along with the earbuds, cords, and chargers to go with them. We also need zippered waterproof pouches for transporting these and the books back and forth. This project will allow students to select a book or books from our classroom library and "check them out," or bring them home to share with a family member - an older sibling, parent or guardian, grandparent, auntie, uncle, anyone! The student and a more "seasoned reader" can enjoy the book together. Then the digital voice recorder can be used in two ways!

A family member can record the text, in their voice, to add to our classroom listening library for everyone to enjoy; families with bilingual readers can even record it in two languages!!

The second way the recorders can be used to improve our young readers' academic achievement is by recording themselves reading the stories, then listening to the playback for miscues, expression, and appropriate pronunciation! My students and their family reading mentor can work on improvements and record it again and listen and follow along with the text!

We use the listening center in the classroom as part of our daily reading group rotations, but it is often my voice the students hear. Imagine the excitement of having students be able to choose from stories read by a loved one! I can upload the recorded stories to create an ever-growing digital library of recordings to go with my large classroom library, so students can listen to a diverse range of texts.

Family members or guardians who wish to be involved but are prohibited from volunteering in the classroom because of their work schedules could bring home a recorder, with a charger, a laminated set of instructions that I've prepared, and a selection of books - all in a zippered, water-proof pouch, and bring it back at their leisure. This would be a great way to promote volunteerism for parents and guardians who are otherwise unable to come to class!
